On Saturday the 1st of September, we the members of Significant Deeds visited the minors and the women at the Kondengui Central Prison in Yaounde, Cameroon. Our day started at 10am with shopping which involved the buying of different articles like school requirements (stationary, books, etc) for the minors, food items and other articles for the basic needs of both the minors and women. Upon our arrival around 3pm at the prison premises, we were received by our fellow SD member who works there alongside her colleague. He was to accompany us throughout our visit. We were then informed that due to a previous security incident, we are no longer permitted to take pictures within the prison vicinity. From there we headed security checking of our items before going in to meet the prisoners.
Our first stop was at the minors section. When we arrived they were all gathered to receive us at their classroom/main hall. They received us warmly with songs us joy and whistling. Once given the floor, we presented ourselves and told them the reason for our visit which was to congratulate those who passed their final year exams with prizes and also to encourage those whole who will like to start going to school as well as assist those already going to school with the school items. After which we bid them farewell.
At our second and last stop which was the women’s section, as soon as they saw us they started gathering to receive us. Once seated they showed us the latest addition to the Cameroonian population, so two lovely looking babies a boy and a girl of which ones mom is mentally ill as we were told. The women were so happy to see us especially the boys within our entourage. We talked with them for sometime listening to their challenges and experiences after which we said farewell and headed for the exit. It was a marvelous sight concerning the smiles we put on their faces. The visit was also enriching for the different life lesson we learnt from talking with them. This also gave us and an idea of what we can bring for them if we plan another visit in the near future. I wish to take this opportunity to thank our various benefactors on behalf of the minors and women at the Kondengui Central Prison. I also wish to inform those interested in assisting us or knowing more about us to visit our Facebook, Twitter, instagram and website www.significantdeeds.com for all contact information. thanks for your kind attention and May God Almighty bless all of us.
